Introduction

M

Sc. Computer Science is one of the popular courses due to recent developments in board career prospects. M.Sc. in Computer Science is a two-year post-graduate programme with the objective to develop human resources with core competence in various thrust areas of Computer Science. The two year M. Sc. course syllabi is divided into four semesters. Candidates who wish to pursue M.Sc. Computer Science are required to pass a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 50% or more in the domain of Computer Science and Mathematics. People with a background in other computing-related fields like B. Sc. IT and BCA can also apply for the course.
            The programme includes software engineering, system development, natural computation, mathematical foundations and artificial intelligence. Other modules include programming, data analytics, software development, applied communications, network architecture, and database design. The coursework of the programme focuses on preparing students for innovation within major tech. companies or entrepreneurship in start-up ventures. 
            Students are provided with opportunities to develop and hone core competency in the field of computer science and encourage them to make a mark in the much sought after IT industry. Guest lectures, case studies and presentations are organised from time to time to give an insight into the latest development and happenings in the industry. After the course students can choose their career path as Software developers, Software Testers, Network Administrators, Database Designers etc.

Career Options after M. Sc. Computer Science

The two major options available for M.Sc. Computer Science graduates are government job or private job. While the number of jobs available in the CS field in the government sector is limited, the scopes of getting employment in the private sector are high. On the other hand, pursuing higher studies after M.Sc. CS is also one of the options. However, it depends on your career aspirations and financial stability. The following will give you a better idea.

After completing M.Sc. Computer Science, you can apply for various government recruitment exams like UPSC or state civil services examination. You can choose the subject that is relevant to your qualification in the entrance test. However, you will need at least one year of rigorous preparation to clear these exams. Also, you can apply for exams conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). For these exams, you can either prepare while pursuing M.Sc. or prepare for them after graduation. As the government job is a life-time settlement, a rigorous preparation will give you benefit.

After passing M.Sc. Computer Science, you can look for private jobs in Software or IT companies. In most cases, the college in which you study may offer campus placements. There are various private job options available for these graduates. However, the initial payments/salaries may be less and once you start gaining the work experience, you can demand more pay.

If you are aiming to become a professor or a lecturer, you will have to clear UGC NET, which will give you eligibility to become an Assistant Professor in Universities or Colleges. While working as an Assistant Professor, you can take up Ph.D. in the field of Computer Science for higher positions like Professor, Head of the Department etc.
