Which is better B.Sc(CS) or B.Sc(IT)?

After Higher Secondary (10+2), students get very much confused about choosing the program (Course) to make their career specially student who have PCM combination (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics). Students have a lot of opportunities who belong to this subject group in different fields so they are mostly confused. The first choice of most of the PCM students is to attempt JEE exam and get admission in IITs/NITs for graduation but there is a lot of competition and limited seats. It is almost difficult to get admission in IITs/NITs. This is the time when they need proper guidance to choose a right path to make a career in their interested area.

Today there are a lot of courses available in different universities for higher education. Computer Technology is a vibrant area in which many students dream to make career. B.Sc.CS) and B.Sc.(IT) are one the best choices to make career in the computer field. Both are 3 years degree programs and have better content to learn and has potential to make your career bright and prepare the students to survive in current technological era. Due to lack of awareness students do not understand which program is suitable for them. Everyone knows about BSc(CS) but when we ask about BSc(IT), most of the time students do not know about the program, sometimes students do not choose IT (Information Technology) because of misunderstanding or some misinformation about the program though both have almost equal opportunities.

This blog has tried to give some guidance about computer science and through light on the difference between Computer Science and Information Technology for an aspiring graduate.

Why you choose B.Sc. (CS)/B.Sc. (IT)?

  • Computing and computer technology are part of our day to day life.
  • It offers rewarding and challenging possibilities for a wide range of people, regardless of their interests.
  • These jobs roles are among the highest paid and have the highest job satisfaction.
  • Actually there are more computing jobs than qualified people to fill them in the whole world.
  • Expertise in computing helps you even if your primary career choice is something else.
  • Creating high-quality computing solutions is a highly creative activity, and computing supports creative work in many other fields.

BSc(CS) Vs BSc(IT)

Information Technology degrees are more about installing, maintaining, and improving computer systems, operating networks, and databases. Computer Science on the other hand is a degree which deals with the theoretical foundations of information and computation, a scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications. Computer Science is considered by many of its practitioners to be a foundational science - one which makes other knowledge and achievements possible.

Some higher education institutions may use Computer Science (CS) as an umbrella term to cover various specialist and vocational degrees involving computers and technology. You may also find the term computer science being used to refer as Information Technology (IT) degrees, although many institutions now distinguish between the two (exactly how and where they draw this line varies).

The work environments expected from both careers can vary, most IT professionals work as part of a team in an organization, serving internal needs or working directly with the clients. Computer Scientists, however, work in businesses, colleges, video game development companies, or as freelancers. Regardless of which appeals more, there’s plenty of potential for career growth and lucrative job opportunities in both fields.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, IT jobs are ever on the rise, with an estimated 15 to 37%* increase in open job roles by 2026. It’s one of the fastest growing occupation among them all, with high demand leading to an average annual wage of around $86k. Just like information technology roles, computer science roles are growing at a rate faster than most occupations. These are expected to be up to 22% more computer science jobs by 2026, with the average developer with a computer science background making around $93k.

The work of an IT specialist can differ greatly but, in most cases, they are there to solve business processes using technologies they have expertise in. Most often they work as part of a team and with other departments or clients. A lot of the work of an IT professional involves finding and implementing technologies with existing systems that help meet the goals of the client or employer. With the right qualifications, a computer scientist can find careers of all kinds, like a programmer, operating systems developer, software engineer and as senior IT professional. Some of the fastest growing computer science jobs include roles such as a computer systems analyst, web developer, systems engineer, and software applications developer. IT specialists are required in organizations of all kinds, while computer scientists are more concentrated in tech based industries.

Today there is always a need of skilled employee in both fields and have equal opportunities in almost all fields of work.
