BCA or B.Tech: Which is a Better Degree for you?

A student who has a modest interest in Computer Science and IT areas is perplexed about what to opt between Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) and Bachelor in Technology (B. Tech. in Computer Sciences). Although the two aren’t really comparable as one is a degree course and the other is an engineering course, yet with the growing demand of BCA and the increase in private institutes, students do come up with queries like, should they do BCA or B.Tech. We have tried our best to clear the doubts of such students by doing a comparative study of BCA vs. B.Tech. Computers have enormously revolutionized modern life, becoming an important part of work and relaxation. Considering the numerous roles that computers play, the study of computers is also varied and jobs are available in countless fields. If you are interested in working in one of the many fields of computers, you may have heard of the 2 most popular courses: BCA, and B.Tech. (Computer Science).

These two programs are computer-based, B.Tech. can be opted by only Science background students but BCA can be opted by students from any stream with Mathematics as one subject. It may become confusing on how to differentiate between them and how to identify which is best suited to us. Despite having common study topics in BCA and B.Tech., there is plenty of variations between them. These differences are visible in their course structure, admission process, and career opportunities. While B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering focus on intensive programming, and mathematical skills, BCA focuses more on practical technologies and applications used in daily life. B.Tech. is more about developing concepts and testing them, whereas BCA is the study of putting these concepts to use. Both BCA and B.Tech. graduates are industry-ready and can seek employment in the IT industry or other related fields. As far as the course fee is concerned, the cost of BCA is lesser than BTech. However, BCA is a three years graduation program, and B.Tech.is a four years graduation program.

Recently report given by NASSCOM and McKinsey report the Indian Information Technology (IT) the industry is assured to grow from $132 billion in 2014-15 to $225 billion by 2020 and will touch $350 billion by 2025. This report also represents that the first $100 billion will generate around two million jobs in the industry. So, whichever degree you choose to pursue, be assured that you are going to be part of a robust and dynamic industry. Now! You must be having doubts, which course you should choose out of these two? Don’t worry! Here, we have given you brief demonstrations of the basic differences between two courses, career opportunities, and prospects for higher studies as well.

Employability Skills:

BCA – Ready for the industry in 3 years. Whereas, B.Tech – Ready for the industry in 4 years. BCA – Industry experience and exposure will always be more than B.Tech. As a matter of fact that BCA joins/enters the industry before B.Tech, BCA will have more experience of the industry standards than a B.Tech. There are many software and multinational companies in India and abroad who are interested in computer science graduates.

TCS, Infosys, IBM, Capgemini, Godrej, L&T, ICICI Bank, Oracle, Axis Bank, SAP, Tencent, Baidu, Wipro, and many more………….

The average salary package of computer science graduates is INR 6 lakhs per annum. This salary package may vary based on the sector and firm of employment of the aspirant as well as the dedication, diligence, and experience of the aspirant at the workplace.

Scope for Masters:

BCA can also do M.Tech after completion of MCA, (if one aspires). This proves there is not much of a difference between both the courses. BCA is under the UGC standards whereas; B.Tech. is under the AICTE standards.

The course curriculum of BCA is industry-oriented with a wide range of possibilities and opportunities where you learn exactly what market demands.  If you are interested in computer coding, programming or IT infrastructures, BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) is definitely the best option for you.
