Madhya Pradesh
scraps age limit for college admissions!

In an extremely competitive world were lagging behind
can cost you a life time of regret, Madhya Pradesh government has given hope to
many students by doing away with the upper age limit set for seeking admissions
in the current academic year.
The upper age limit was one of the main deterrents for
admitting more students to under graduation and post-graduation
programmes. The maximum age limit for admission
to undergraduate programmes in MP was 21 years and 28 years for postgraduate
courses. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students were granted an
additional relaxation period of 3 years.
The admission
process for the academic year 2021-22 will commence from 1st August. The state
government is hoping to see a rise in the number of applicants with this relaxation.
This decision made
by the Education Department, MP, has brought relief to many educationists. Lobbying
on the grounds that setting an age limit for admission was gross violation of
the Right to Education, many activists across the country have been rallying
for this change.
The flip side of
this positive change is the miss use of it. Over the years many colleges have
witnessed students prolonging their studies to be active participants of
student politics. A well-crafted mechanism to ensure this change is not misused
will be the next step that the educational department will need to undertake.
On the other hand, there are many students who can’t pursue higher education
because of poor financial conditions, inaccessibility to educational
institutions and many other unavoidable circumstances. Laying down a strict
criterion in terms of age limit disables those who gain opportunity to higher
education after they have crossed the age limit. This in turn also brings down
the literacy rate of our country.
Only time will
tell if this change in age limit will bring about a change in educational
scenario of our country. But definitely, an encouraging move by the
government.
